Job Description:

Our client, a growing African mining investment group, is seeking a Financial Accountant to join its Group Finance team at head office in Johannesburg. Reporting to the Group Financial Manager, the successful candidate will maintain accurate financial records across multiple group entities, support monthly management reporting, and keep the group audit-ready throughout the year. This is a senior role for a self-starter and independent thinker who takes full ownership of the numbers, from processing through to reporting. Culture fit is the most important factor for this appointment.

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare, post and review accounting journals in Xero, including weekly journals, accruals, prepayments, provisions and month-end adjustments, ensuring each entry is recorded in the correct entity, account and period.
  • Maintain accurate accounting records across all group companies, perform balance-sheet reconciliations, and assist with month-end close and monthly management accounts.
  • Prepare and coordinate twice-weekly payment runs, perform supplier and payment reconciliations, verify supplier banking details, and prepare Balance of Payments documentation for international payments.
  • Prepare monthly VAT reconciliations, review VAT treatment of transactions, and support VAT submissions and statutory compliance.
  • Reconcile intercompany loans, trading balances and shared-service recharges, and assist with the allocation of group and shared-service costs.
  • Prepare project, transport and trading reconciliations, monitor project spend against budget, and analyse performance against budgets and forecasts.
  • Maintain the Fixed Asset Register, prepare audit schedules, respond to auditor queries, and assist with annual financial statements.
  • Strengthen financial controls and processes, and maintain Excel Power Query reports, financial models and trading summaries.

Requirements: Qualification and Skill

  • BCom Accounting degree, and qualified as a CA(SA) with SAICA OR a Professional Accountant (SA) with SAIPA.
  • Excellent technical knowledge of accounting journals. This is the core competence for the role, and shortlisted candidates will be asked to work through a scenario and write the journals.
  • Senior post-articles experience in a financial accounting role. Experience working across multiple companies, projects or business units advantageous.
  • Practical experience with month-end reporting, reconciliations, VAT and audit preparation. Mining or industrial exposure advantageous, but open to candidates from other industries.
  • Experience using Xero, Sage or similar accounting software, and advanced Excel skills (PivotTables, lookups, Power Query). Power BI or VBA exposure advantageous.
  • Sound working knowledge of IFRS / IFRS for SMEs and South African VAT and income-tax principles.
  • Strong attention to detail, analytical ability, and the ability to manage multiple entities and deadlines.
  • A senior, self-starting and independent thinker who works autonomously with minimal supervision, taking ownership of tasks and resolving issues rather than just flagging them.
  • Afrikaans language is essential.

Benefits and Contractual information:

  • Position based at head office in Johannesburg, Gauteng, South Africa.
  • Competitive salary and benefits package.
